Sure, everyone knows this familiar refrain. It’s the theme song from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s stage adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera. But do you know the words that go with the tune?
You will, if you dig out your fancy clothes and join the Cowtown Opera this weekend at the Lantern Church in Inglewood. No, it’s not open auditions, it’s a Phantom of the Opera Sing-Along. Directed by Aaron Coates, with musical direction by Jason Erhardt and artistic direction by Michelle Minke, this is a three-of-a-kind show, with performances on Friday and Saturday night at 7:30, and a matinee on Sunday at 2:30. Tickets are available through EventBrite, and will run you $42 plus service fees ($38 for students and seniors).
Cowtown Opera recommends that you come in your formal attire, to better match the tiaras and Phantom masks that they will be distributing to the patrons. You will settle into the historic old church – but not too settled, as you’ll soon be called upon to join the rest of the audience in belting out your favourite Phantom classics, like Think of Me and All I Ask of You (we’ve linked to the lyrics if you want to study beforehand). But don’t despair if your voice isn’t exactly up to opera par – you’ll be accompanied by a full orchestra, and professionals will be front and center, helping to bring the story to life.
Cowtown Opera‘s tagline is “inspiring Calgary’s cultural spirit with a kick of the West to the world of opera.” You may have seen some of their past performances at Heritage Park, or heard of their Summer Academy at the Mount Royal University Conservatory. Known for their introduction of young local talent and obvious western influences, this production is another of their steps towards bringing the wonderful world of opera to a wider Calgary audience.
