I went to the Commonwealth Bar and Stage on Tuesday night to check out Ghostface Killah and Sheek Louch. The pair have recently formed a collaboration called Wu-Block, which is a combination of Wu-Tang and D-Block. I was nervous before I went, because I knew that any proper hip hop show wouldn’t start until at least midnight. I am in my thirties, so this would normally be a deterrent – but I took on a YOLO attitude, gathered some super fun friends and went for it. We got there at around the same time I would normally go to bed, to find Calgary’s DJ Disoriental was spinning records. He was awesome and kept the crowd totally hyped. I was having so much fun, I forgot I was tired.
When Ghostface and Sheek Louch took to the stage, the crowd went nuts and a sea of “W’s” went up. I felt a little star struck, seeing two legends in such an intimate environment. I quickly discovered why their careers have spanned twenty years – they know how to party! They were high energy and so much fun, and they played a few songs off of their new album before switching things up and starting to play some older jams. They played The Lox’s hit Money, Power and Respect, and then came my favourite of the night, a rendition the Wu-Tang Clan’s debut single from 1992, Protect Ya Neck. They invited two volunteers from the audience to rap the parts for Ol’ Dirty Bastard and Method Man. I was worried we were in for karaoke gone wrong, but instead the boys rocked the house and totally did Calgary proud. The nostalgia continued when they played Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s hit Shimmy Shimmy Ya, and then Sheek Louch did an homage to Notorious B.I.G., which kept the energy going. The show went on until 2am and the crowd danced, jumped and partied right until the end. I was sad it was over, even knowing I was in for a painful next day; but like I said, YOLO!
